Air permeability of thermally modified hemlock wood

چکیده
Western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) is a prevalent coastal species in British Columbia (BC). Its wood has high potential for thermal modification, process that can affect numerous physical properties, including air permeability. The current study investigates the longitudinal permeability of modified at three temperature levels, 170 °C, 212 and 230 two-hour treatment length. Permeability values obtained using Darcy’s law water-falling volume displacement method were positively correlated with up to after which decreased slightly. ANOVA followed by Duncan test revealed °C significantly increased permeability, whereas it was insignificant °C.

Colour Stability of Thermally Modified Wood during Short-Term Photodegradation
Dry thermal treatments of wood samples were carried out at 160 and 200 °C. After each treatment, the samples were irradiated using a strong UV emitter mercury lamp, and the colour change was then evaluated. For control, untreated samples were also irradiated using the same mercury lamp. Results showed that the extractive content of the wood played an important role in the colour change not only...

In this study, beech wood was treated in hot oil and in hot air to determine the differences in the effects of the two processes on the physical properties of the wood. Heat treatment was conducted at temperatures of 160, 190, and 220 °C for 2 h at atmospheric pressure. After the heat treatment, various properties of the wood, including mass increase in hot oil treatment (wt% gain), mass loss i...
متن کاملInfluence of Post-extraction on Photostability of Thermally Modified Scots Pine Wood during Artificial Weathering
The photo-stabilizing effect of post-extraction was evaluated for thermally modified wood. Extracted and non-extracted thermally modified Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) samples were exposed in a xenon weather-ometer for 1008 h, and the surface color and chemical changes were characterized using a chroma meter, attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), an...
متن کاملInfluence of Heat Transferring Media on Durability of Thermally Modified Wood
Studies on the durability and dimensional stability of a series of hardwoods and softwoods after thermal modification in vegetable oils and in steam atmospheres have been performed. Mass loss after exposure to Coniophora puteana (BAM Ebw.15) for 16 weeks was very low for European birch, European aspen, Norway spruce, and Scots pine thermally modified in a linseed oil product with preservative (...
متن کاملEffect of Artificial Weathering on the Properties of Industrial-Scale Thermally Modified Wood
Thermally modified wood is widely used in cladding, decking, and other construction projects that are meant for outdoor exposure. The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in the color, microstructure, and chemical composition of heat-treated, Larix spp. wood that was exposed to artificial weathering. In this study, accelerated weathering tests (UV and moisture) were conducted over a...
